Question
What are the only two teams whose tight ends have finished with fewer than 600 yards in back-to-back seasons? One of these teams is as expected (well known for not using the position much recently). The other is a surprise – the one that makes the question interesting (well, somewhat interesting). A tight end for one of these teams will be playing for the other in the 2023 season.
Answer
Carolina and Cincinnati. The Panthers haven’t passed much at all to tight ends in recent seasons. Cincinnati’s tight ends last year caught 73 passes (above average) but for only 556 yards. That’s an average of 35 yards per week, ranking 29th among the 32 teams. The Bengals also averaged 35 tight end yards the previous season. Hayden Hurst started for Cincinnati last year but has signed a contract to play for Carolina in 2023.
