The Houston Texans face a significant setback with offensive lineman Tytus Howard being ruled out with a knee injury that will require season-ending surgery.
The injury occurred during last Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars inn the first quarter after QB C.J. Stroud completed a pass to rookie receiver Tank Dell which was called back due to an illegal shift..
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday morning that Howard is expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing testing. The need for surgery on his knee was confirmed.
Howard's season had already been challenging prior to this injury. He missed the first four weeks of the regular season due to a broken hand sustained during training camp. Upon his return, he was moved to left guard, as veteran tackle George Fant effectively covered right tackle during his absence.
Rookie Juice Scruggs entered the game as Howard left the field. Scruggs, himself, is just returning to practice after missing the first ten games due to a hamstring injury.
"I thought he stepped in and did a good job of being ready to go," coach DeMeco Ryans said of Scruggs on Sunday after the game.
The Texans lost to the Jaguars 24-21.
Houston plays the Denver Broncos at home Sunday, December 3rd.
