Red Sox trade Chris Sale to the Braves

The Atlanta Braves acquired starting pitcher Chris Sale and cash considerations. In return, the Boston Red Sox will receive infielder Vaughn Grissom. The trade was finalized on the penultimate day of 2023.

Last season, Sale had a 6-5 record in 20 games. He posted a 4.30 earned run average and struck out 125 batters in 102.2 innings. It’s the first time he went beyond 100 innings over the last three seasons. His recovery from Tommy John surgery limited him to 42.2 innings in 2021. Last year, he pitched only 5.2 innings due to rib, finger, and wrist injuries.

But at his best, Chris Sale is a seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star who has also received votes for the American League Cy Young Award and the AL Most Valuable Player Award.

He finished second in the 2017 AL Cy Young voting and ninth in the MVP voting after leading the league in innings pitched (214.1), strikeouts (308), and fielding independent pitching (2.45). Sale finished with a 17-8 record with a 2.90 ERA and had one complete game.

Sale’s latest All-Star selection came in 2018 when he posted a 12-4 record with 237 strikeouts in 158 innings. He finished that season with an impressive 2.11 ERA.

Chris Sale started his MLB career with the Chicago White Sox in 2010 and earned his first All-Star selection two years later. In December 2016, the White Sox traded him to the Red Sox for Michael Kopech, Victor Diaz, Luis Alexander Basabe, and Yoan Moncada.

Aside from his individual accolades, he also won the 2018 World Series title with the Red Sox. He holds the league record for fastest pitcher to 2,000 strikeouts and career strikeouts per nine innings (11.1). Sale is also tied with Sandy Koufax and Max Scherzer for most immaculate innings pitched (3).

The 2024 MLB season is the final year under Sale’s five-year, $145 million contract extension. The deal includes a club option for 2025.
