Giolito, Red Sox agree to one-year deal

The Boston Red Sox signed right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito to a one-year deal with a player option in 2025. He pitched for the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland Guardians last season, finishing with an 8-15 record in 33 games started.

Giolito struck out 204 batters and gave up an American League-leading 41 home runs in 184.1 innings pitched. He had a 4.88 earned run average and gave up 169 hits.

He became a 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star while playing for the Chicago White Sox. That year, he had a 14-9 record, finishing with a 3.41 ERA and striking out 228 batters. That season, Giolito also led the majors in complete games (3) and shutouts (2).

Giolito received votes for the American League Cy Young Award in 2019, 2020, and 2021 but went as high as sixth place.

He started his MLB career in June 2016 with the Washington Nationals. Six months later, he was traded to the White Sox with Dane Dunning and Reynaldo Lopez for Adam Eaton.

Earlier this year, Giolito signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the White Sox to avoid arbitration. However, he was traded to the Angels with Lopez for Ky Bush and Edgar Quero. The Angels placed him on waivers on August 29, and the Guardians claimed him two days later.

Giolito has a 4.43 ERA in eight MLB seasons. He has struck out 1,077 batters in 1013.2 innings pitched.
