Giants hire Dusty Baker as special assistant

The San Francisco Giants brought back a familiar face in Dusty Baker. However, he won’t be managing the team in 2024. Instead, he will be a special assistant to President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi and CEO Larry Baer.

Baker himself revealed that he was negotiating a non-coaching role. The negotiations pulled through, and he’s back to the team he managed from 1993 to 2002. During his tenure as Giants manager, he had five seasons of at least 90 wins, including a 103-win season in 1993.

That success level led to two National League Division Series and a World Series appearance. Aside from the Giants, Baker also managed the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, and the Houston Astros, wherein he finally won a World Series title in 2022. Giving the Astros a Commissioner’s Trophy

Baker left the Astros after four seasons, leading the team to a yearly postseason appearance. He has a 2,183-1,862 regular season managerial record and a 57-51 postseason mark. He is also the first manager in MLB history to lead five different teams to division titles.

Dusty Baker will also impart wisdom on developing the 20 international free agents they signed. His hiring could ignite a Giants team that finished 79-83 last season.
