Kendall Graveman to miss 2024 MLB season

The Athletic’s Houston Astros beat writer Kendall Graveman tweeted that pitcher Kendall Graveman will skip the 2024 Major League Baseball season due to surgery on his right shoulder.

Graveman had his second stint with the Astros when the Chicago White Sox traded him for catcher Corey Lee. He had a 2-2 record last year with a 2.42 earned run average and 24 strikeouts in 22 innings.

His first stint with the Astros was in 2021, when the Seattle Mariners traded him and Rafael Montero for Joe Smith and Abraham Toro. That year, he went 1-1 with a 3.13 ERA and 27 strikeouts. Graveman was also the last pitcher to register an at-bat due to the National League’s adoption of the designated hitter position.

The 33-year-old pitcher from Alabama made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014. A year later, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics with Sean Nolin, Brett Lawrie, and Franklin Barretto for Josh Donaldson. He played for the Athletics until July 2018, when he underwent Tommy John surgery.

That operation forced him to skip the 2019 MLB season. After recovering from the injury, he signed a one-year deal with the Mariners.

The 2024 MLB season would have been the final year under the three-year, $24 million contract he signed in 2021.
