Cardinals sign Matt Carpenter to a one-year deal

Infielder Matt Carpenter will return to familiar territory after the St. Louis Cardinals signed him to a one-year deal for the 2024 Major League Baseball season.

Carpenter started his career with the Cardinals from 2011 to 2021. During that stretch, he earned votes for the National League Most Valuable Player award and became a three-time MLB All-Star. He also won a Silver Slugger award in 2013 after leading the league in runs (126) and hits (199). He batted .318/.392/.481/.873 in the same year.

After 11 seasons in St. Louis, he signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers. However, he did not make it to their 2022 Opening Day roster. Instead, he was assigned to the Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate but was released in May.

Carpenter continued the 2022 season with the New York Yankees. But while he was once named American League Player of the Week, a foot injury after fouling a pitch sidelined him for six to eight weeks. He played during the postseason but had just one hit on 12 at-bats.

The Texas native played for the San Diego Padres last season, hitting .176 in 188 at-bats. He had 33 hits, 31 runs batted in, and five home runs in his lone season with San Diego.

Matt Carpenter has a .260 career batting average on 1225 hits in 4,719 at-bats. He also has 644 RBIs and 175 home runs.
