Can the Lions roar their way to the NFC Championship Game?

The Detroit Lions are one win away from the NFC Championship Game. The last time they were there was during the 1991 season. However, they lost to the eventual Super Bowl XXVI champions Washington Redskins.

But before going there, they must clear the challenge the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will bring during their Divisional Round pairing. The Buccaneers are confident coming into this game after defeating last season’s NFC champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Meanwhile, the Lions defeated the Los Angeles Rams and earned the right to play again at home after the seventh-seed Green Bay Packers defeated the second-seed Dallas Cowboys.

Against the Rams, Dan Campbell’s crew demonstrated elements that can propel them to a championship run. They gained two rushing touchdowns from David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. First Team All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown led the way with seven receptions for 110 yards.

Aidan Hutchinson registered two sacks, while Jared Goff completed 81.4 percent of his throws (22 of 27) for 277 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions.

While the Lions advanced against the Rams, their game has much room for improvement. Hutchinson needs help in the pass rush, especially when his two sacks are the only ones generated by Detroit. He also had five of the Lions’ seven quarterback hits.

The Lions barely survived the Rams, winning by one point, despite surrendering 181 yards to Puka Nacua. Luckily for Detroit, former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities.

The Buccaneers will be a tough out, especially when versatile running back Rachaad White gets going. Tampa Bay has a potent passing attack with Mike Evans and Chris Godwin leading the way. Baker Mayfield’s accuracy is outstanding once he gets in the zone.

The Lions must raise their game further as the competition gets more challenging. They are back on a clean slate and should intensify their hunger for winning.

The Lions and the Buccaneers will compete on Sunday, January 21, at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
