MLB Network names Yordan Alvarez as top left fielder

The Major League Baseball Network and the league’s fans agree that the Houston Astros’ Yordan Alvarez is the best left fielder in the league right now. The Cuban outfielder earned his second All-Star and third All-MLB Second Team selection last year.

Alvarez took home those distinctions after hitting .293/.407/.583 in 410 at-bats. He also had 120 hits, 97 runs batted in, and 31 home runs in 114 games. He also had a 1.000 fielding percentage in 343.1 innings last season, courtesy of two assists and 59 putouts.

During the 2022 MLB season, he was instrumental in the Astros run to a World Series title after clinching a .306 batting average and 37 home runs in 470 at-bats. Those numbers earned him an All-MLB First Team selection and a Silver Slugger award. Alvarez had ten hits, three home runs, and 14 RBIs in the 2022 playoffs.

Alvarez’s game continues to trend up after winning the 2019 American League Rookie of the Year Award. Luckily, the Astros will have him under contract until 2028 after he signed a six-year, $115 million deal.

Meanwhile, the MLB Network ranked the New York Mets’ Brandon Nimmo as the second-best left fielder in the league. The Colorado Rockies’ Nolan Jones is third, while the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Bryan Reynolds is fourth. The Astros’ Chas McCormick takes the fifth spot.
