Corey Seager underwent sports hernia surgery

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager underwent surgery in Arizona to repair his left sports hernia. General manager Chris Young shared the news, and Seager will undergo rehabilitation. Despite his status, the team expects him to be healthy when the 2024 season starts.

Seager might have acquired the injury during the 2023 Major League Baseball playoffs. As part of his recovery, he might miss a considerable portion of Spring Training. If he isn't available by opening weekend, Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran might get extended minutes at shortstop.

Seager is instrumental in delivering the Rangers’ first-ever World Series title. In his second season with Texas, he hit .327 with 96 runs batted in and 33 home runs in 119 games. Those numbers landed him second place in the American League Most Valuable Player voting behind Shohei Ohtani. He was also an MLB All-Star and an All-MLB First Team member.

He remained consistently good during the playoffs, hitting .318 with six home runs and 12 RBIs in 17 games. Seager became the fourth player in league history to win World Series MVP twice. However, he is the first to win it in both leagues.

Injuries have been a part of Seager’s career. He’s had seasons of 27, 26, 52, and 95 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He even underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018 and missed 31 games last season due to a hamstring injury. Despite his health concerns, the Rangers signed him to a ten-year, $325 million contract in December 2021, a year after he won the World Series with the Dodgers.

Seager has a .292 career batting average, 1,019 hits, 543 RBIs, and 170 home runs over nine MLB seasons. He also has three Silver Slugger Awards and the 2016 National League Rookie of the Year award.
