Chapman, Snell lead list of top remaining free agents

With Spring Training happening this month, some top Major League Baseball players remain without a team. Third baseman Matt Chapman and starting pitcher Blake Snell lead the remaining free agents.

Chapman won his fourth Gold Glove last season after clinching a .968 fielding percentage. He used his strong arm to collect 114 putouts and 253 assists out of 379 defensive chances. In his second season with the Toronto Blue Jays, Chapman hit .240 with 39 doubles, 54 runs batted in, and 17 home runs in 509 at-bats.

Meanwhile, Snell won his second Cy Young Award while playing for the San Diego Padres last season. He led the league in earned run average (2.25), ERA+ (182), and walks (99). Snell had a 1.189 WHIP and 234 strikeouts in 180 innings.

Relief pitcher Jakob Junis remains available despite posting a 4-3 record and a 3.87 ERA in 2023. While playing for the San Francisco Giants, he struck out 96 batters in 86 innings. Junis earned $2.8 million last season.

Designated hitter J.D. Martinez will still be without an MLB team in 2024 despite earning his sixth All-Star nod last year. He batted .271 last season with 117 hits, 103 RBIs, and 33 home runs for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Second baseman Whit Merrifield is still without a team after playing for the Blue Jays last season. He became an All-Star and finished the season batting .272 with 149 hits, 67 RBIs, and 11 home runs. Merrifield had a .984 fielding percentage as a second baseman.

Finally, Jorge Soler remains a free agent despite earning his first All-Star selection last year. The 2021 World Series Most Valuable Player batted .250 with 126 hits, 36 home runs, and 75 RBIs.
