Mets to sign relief pitcher Jake Diekman

Sources revealed that the New York Mets are working on a deal to bring in relief pitcher Jake Diekman. The veteran left-handed pitcher will play his 13th Major League Baseball season this year.

Diekman joined the Tampa Bay Rays last May after getting released by the Chicago White Sox. He had a 2.18 earned run average and 50 strikeouts in 45.1 innings. He also posted a 1.12 WHIP in 50 games. It contrasts the 7.94 ERA in 13 pitching opportunities with the White Sox last season.

He has a career 3.82 ERA with 724 strikeouts and a 1.392 WHIP in 570.1 innings. Aside from the Rays and the White Sox, Diekman has played for the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics, and the Boston Red Sox.

Diekman joins the short list of left-handed pitchers in the Mets’ system, featuring Brooks Raley, Josh Walker, Danny Young, and Nate Lavender. He will also join a bullpen with Adam Ottavino, Michael Tonkin, Drew Smith, Phil Bickford, Jorge Lopez, Sean Reid-Foley, and closer Edwin Diaz.

The Mets will start their Spring Training games against the St. Louis Cardinals. This month, they will also face the Houston Astros, Washington Nationals, and Miami Marlins.
