Pirates sign Yasmani Grandal and Josh Fleming to one-year deals

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed catcher Yasmani Grandal and left-handed pitcher Josh Fleming for the 2024 Major League Baseball season. Terms of their deals were not disclosed.

Grandal played for the Chicago White Sox in 2023, his fourth season with the squad. He hit .234 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs in 118 games. He made 92 appearances behind home plate and finished with a .995 fielding percentage, the fifth-best rate among American League catchers last season.

Grandal is a two-time All-Star who started his career with the San Diego Padres. After three seasons, he was a part of the trade package that was sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Matt Kemp, Tim Federowicz, and cash considerations.

He had a one-season stint with the Milwaukee Brewers before joining the White Sox on a four-year, $73 million contract in 2019. He has played 1,043 games, the fifth-most among catchers, behind J.T. Realmuto, Martin Maldonado, Salvador Perez, and Yadier Molina.

The Cuban catcher has a .237 career batting average with 185 home runs and 565 RBIs. He had 134 home runs since 2016, the fourth-most among catchers, behind Realmuto, Perez, and Gary Sanchez.

Meanwhile, Fleming went 2-0 in 12 appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays last season. In his nine relief appearances, his 60.8 ground ball rate is the highest among Rays pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched.

He has a 19-13 record with a 4.88 ERA in four seasons with the Rays. He struck out 144 batters in 223.1 innings. Fleming went 15-8 in his first two seasons with the Rays.
