Phillies sign Whit Merrifield to a one-year, $8 million deal

ESPN insider Jeff Passan reported that veteran second baseman/outfielder Whit Merrifield signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies for the 2024 Major League Baseball season. His contract includes a club option for the 2025 season with a $1 million buyout. He can also earn up to $1.6 million in incentives, according to Spotrac.

Merrifield is coming off an All-Star season with the Toronto Blue Jays after batting .272 with 67 runs batted and 11 home runs in 592 plate appearances.

Merrifield landed in Toronto after an August 2022 trade that sent him to the Blue Jays for Samad Taylor and Max Castillo. He could have entered Canada before the July 2022 All-Star Break but couldn’t because of his failure to satisfy the country’s COVID-19 vaccination requirement. He finally played with the Blue Jays after getting his vaccination.

Merrifield had his MLB debut with the Kansas City Royals in May 2016, six years after being selected in the ninth round of the amateur rookie draft. In 2018, he received votes for the American League Most Valuable Player award after hitting .304 while leading the majors in hits (192) and stolen bases (45).

A year later, he earned his first All-Star nod with 206 hits (including ten triples), 74 runs batted in, 20 stolen bases, and 16 home runs in 681 plate appearances. Merrifield played in all 162 regular season games for the Royals in 2019.

He received his second All-Star selection in 2021 with a .277 batting average and a league-leading 42 doubles in 664 at-bats over 162 games. Whit Merrifield is a career .284 hitter with 1,184 hits, 470 RBIs, and 90 home runs.
