Cubs sign David Peralta to minor-league deal

FanSided’s Robert Murray first reported that outfielder David Peralta signed a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. He will be added to the major league roster once his recovery from a torn flexor tendon in his elbow is complete.

Peralta mostly played left field for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, batting .259 with 551 runs batted in and seven home runs in 422 plate appearances. However, the one-time Gold Glove winner had a .990 fielding percentage and 203 putouts last season.

Aside from getting his defensive prowess, the Cubs will benefit from Peralta’s solid hitting against right-handed pitchers. Of the 117 career home runs he had, 100 are against right-handers.

However, the outfield spot he will play is uncertain because the Cubs have Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ. Mike Tauchman will likely take over at center field if the Cubs can’t re-sign Cody Bellinger. While he has played other outfielder positions, he has played mostly in left field.

The Venezuelan started his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He played there for nine seasons before getting traded to the Tampa Bay Rays for Christian Cerda. Last season, Peralta agreed on a one-year, $6.5 million deal with the Dodgers.

David Peralta is a career .279 hitter with 1,103 hits, 541 RBIs, and 491 runs in 1,141 games. He has played over 100 regular season games in only five of his ten MLB seasons.
