Liam Hendriks sign two-year, $10 million deal with Red Sox

MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo first reported that the Boston Red Sox were closing in on a deal with right-handed closing pitcher Lian Hendriks. Meanwhile, more details about the contract eventually came in. MLB.com’s Ian Browne wrote that Hendriks got a two-year deal worth $10 million in guaranteed money.

He could earn up to $20 million in incentives, and both parties have a mutual option for the 2026 Major League Baseball season. Tommy John surgery cut Hendriks’ 2023 season with the Chicago White Sox. However, he has fully recovered and will return to the mound soon.

Aside from an elbow injury, Hendriks overcame non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma during the 2023 offseason. He overcame the disease and returned to the mound last May 29.

The Red Sox might have signed Hendriks to prepare for Kenley Jansen’s potential departure. Jansen will be a free agent after the 2024 season and could attract interest from several MLB teams. While Jansen is under contract, Hendriks can continue building strength on his throwing arm without pressure. He will likely take over as the closer when Jansen leaves.

Hendriks had back-to-back All-Star seasons in 2021 and 2022. He led the American League with 38 saves and finished with a 2.54 earned run average three years ago. The Australian pitcher finished the 2021 season with an 8-3 record and tallied 113 strikeouts.

Hendriks also earned votes for the American League Cy Young Award in 2020 and 2021. He started his career with the Minnesota Twins and played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, and Oakland Athletics.
