Commanders have most cap space coming into 2024 league year

With the 2024 NFL league year fast approaching, all front offices are consolidating their strategies in building their rosters. Since every season is a fresh start, every team has a chance to turn their fortunes around if they play their cards right.

While the Washington Commanders finished the 2023 season at 4-13, they are in a fantastic position to make a splash this offseason because of their massive salary cap space. Over The Cap estimates Washington’s surplus at $73.6 million based on the projected $242 million salary cap next season.

However, multiple media outlets have reported that the cap might be $250 million for 2024. If true, that additional $8 million brings the Commanders’ spending capacity to $81.6 million.

It’s up to new general manager Adam Peters to build the best roster without breaking the bank. They have the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which they will likely use for a quarterback like Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.

They will need edge rushers after dealing Montez Sweat and Chase Young before last season’s trade deadline. Getting another pass rusher provides help for Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen, who dominate the interior defensive line.

The Commanders also need much help on their offensive line, especially after allowing 65 sacks on Sam Howell last season. Conversely, upgrading their cornerback depth chart is ideal because they surrendered the most passing yards per game (262.2) in 2023.

Washington could also use reinforcements at tight end and a change-of-pace running back. Knowing what needs to be built, the ball is now on Peters’ court to make the Commanders a relevant NFL franchise again.
