Kodai Senga dealing with arm fatigue

New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza shared that right-handed pitcher Kodai Senga is dealing with arm fatigue after one of their spring training sessions. While he underwent an examination with the team’s trainers, it’s uncertain if he will need an MRI.

The Mets brought in Senga via a five-year, $75 million contract last season. He had an impressive rookie season in Major League Baseball after playing for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks in Nippon Professional Baseball for 11 seasons.

Senga had a 12-7 record and a 2.98 earned run average in his first season with the Mets. He struck out 202 batters and gave up 60 runs in 166.1 innings. Those numbers made him an All-Star appearance and gained him votes for the National League Cy Young Award and the NL Rookie of the Year.

The 31-year-old pitcher is a sensation in his home country after winning the Japan Series five times and being an NPB All-Star thrice. In 2020, he won the Japanese Triple Crown after leading the league in ERA, strikeouts, and wins.

Before playing in the United States, Senga was also a two-time Pacific League Best Nine awardee. The Mets hope Senga will lead their pitching rotation after a strong rookie season. Joining him are Sean Manaea and Luis Severino, two pitchers they’ve acquired in the 2024 offseason. The Mets traded for Adrian Houser last December.

The Mets revamped their think tank after a 75-87 finish last season. David Stearns took over as baseball operations president last September, and Mendoza joined the team two months later.
