Cardinals sign Brandon Crawford

The St. Louis Cardinals signed veteran Brandon Crawford to solidify their shortstop rotation. While Masyn Winn will be the likely starter, Crawford will be his backup until Tommy Edman recovers from his wrist injury.

Crawford played 13 seasons for the San Francisco Giants, the only team he has suited up as of the 2023 season. He became a three-time All-Star, a four-time Gold Glove recipient, and a one-time Silver Slugger awardee.

He received votes for the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 2016 and 2021. Three years ago, he batted .298/.373/.522 with 90 runs batted in and 24 home runs.

Aside from the individual awards mentioned above, Crawford is also a part of two World Series-winning teams. He won the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year award in 2015 and 2016 and the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 2022.

Despite his earlier accomplishments, he is coming off a season wherein he batted .194/.273/.314 in 93 games. It’s his lowest average in 13 MLB seasons. Crawford is a career .250/.319/.396 hitter with 744 runs batted in and 146 home runs.
