The Athletic’s Tim Britton reported that New York Mets pitcher Max Kranick might not be available for Opening Day 2024. He suffered a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, landing on the injured list to start the season.

While he will need only ten days to recover, he must build his strength after. But even if he returns to total health, he might not make it to the Mets’ starting rotation. Instead, he will likely be a setup man for the closer.

The 26-year-old pitcher made his Major League Baseball debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021. He had a 2-3 record in nine games, posting a 1.707 WHIP and 32 strikeouts. A year later, he underwent Tommy John surgery, limiting him to two games.

The Pirates designated him for assignment on January 5, 2024. A week later, the Mets claimed him off waivers. Kranick has a 5.56 earned run average in 43.2 innings in two seasons with Pittsburgh. He had 36 strikeouts and a 1.649 WHIP.

Aside from Kranick, Kodai Senga will also be out early in the regular season due to a shoulder injury, while David Peterson is out due to hip surgery.

The New York Mets will open the 2024 MLB season against the Milwaukee Brewers.
