As shared by JPAFootball on X (formerly Twitter), Philadelphia Eagles running back D’Andre Swift will be a free agent once the 2024 league year starts on March 13. On that day, the four-year, $8.53 million rookie-scale contract he signed with the Detroit Lions will expire.

The Eagles cannot exercise a fifth-year option for him because the Lions selected him in Round 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft. Meanwhile, his impending free agency will allow teams looking for a running back to negotiate with him starting March 11.

The Lions traded Swift to the Eagles in April 2023. Philadelphia gave up their 2024 fourth-round pick and a seventh-round pick swap for the former Georgia standout.

However, there’s merit in bringing him back after tallying the first 1,000-yard season in his four-year NFL career. Aside from finishing with 1,049 yards, he had six total touchdowns (five rushing) in 16 games. He earned a $1,774,397 base salary for this production.

He became the focal point of the Eagles’ running attack after Miles Sanders signed with the Carolina Panthers. Swift helped the Eagles reach the playoffs despite the losses they experienced towards the end of the season.

Aside from Swift, Boston Scott and Rashaad Penny will become free agents. Therefore, the Eagles will be in the market for a new running back through the free agency or the 2024 NFL Draft.
