Question

Brock Bowers looks certain to be the first tight end drafted, entering the league with more buzz that the most-coveted tight ends in most drafts. But it’s a position where players don’t tend to step in and dominate. In the last 20 years, who are the only two tight ends selected with first-round picks who’ve put up top-10 numbers (using PPR scoring) in their first season?

Answer

Evan Engram and Kyle Pitts. Engram was the 23rd pick in 2017; he finished as the 5th-best tight end in his first season. Pitts was the 4th pick of the 2021 draft, ranking 6th among tight ends in his first season. Going back further, Jeremy Shockey finished as the No. 3 tight end in 2002, Eric Green was the 7th tight end in 1990, and Keith Jackson was the No. 1 overall tight end in 1988. Six rookie tight ends picked in the first round finished with top-10 numbers between 1970 and 1980: Raymond Chester, Billy Joe Dupree, Charle Young, Russ Francis, Ozzie Newsome and Junior Miller.
