Lucas Giolito Might Miss 2024 Season for Red Sox

ESPN insider Jeff Passan tweeted that Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito might miss the entire 2024 Major League Baseball season because of a partially torn UCL and flexor strain on his right elbow. The injury might require surgery, forcing him to skip 2024.

This development will jeopardize Giolito’s stint with the Red Sox. Last January, he signed a one-year deal with Boston with a player option after 2024.

Giolito played for the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland Guardians last season. He compiled an 8-15 record with a 4.88 earned run average in 33 games and struck out 204 batters in 184.1 innings.

Meanwhile, sports physician Jesse Morse, M.D. shared that Giolito underwent Tommy John surgery in 2012 when he was still playing at Harvard-Westlake High School in Los Angeles, California. Morse added that the veteran pitcher will likely undergo another Tommy John surgery before continuing his career. But in doing so, he might miss 2024 and a portion of the 2025 season.

Giolito started his career with the Washington Nationals, pitching in six games during the 2016 season. A year later, he was part of the trade that brought Adam Eaton to Washington. In return, the White Sox received him, Dane Dunning, and Reynaldo Lopez.

He became a Cy Young Award candidate with Chicago after completing four double-digit winning seasons, except the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. But his seven-season stint with the White Sox ended when they traded him and Lopez to the Angels for Edgar Quero and Kyle Bush.

However, the Angels placed him on the waiver wire on August 29, one month after his arrival. The Guardians claimed him off waiver two days later.

Giolito has a career 4.43 ERA with 1,077 strikeouts and a 1.254 WHIP.
