Noelvi Marte Suspended for Violating MLB's Anti-PED Policy

Rookie shortstop/third baseman Noelvi Marte received an 80-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s policy against performance-enhancing drugs. The Dominican Republic infielder tested positive for Boldenone, and his suspension will commence once the 2024 season starts.

Meanwhile, the Reds stated that they fully support the 22-year-old’s suspension.

The Seattle Mariners signed him as an international free agent in July 2018. Marte played in the 2019 Dominican Summer League, hitting .309 with nine home runs and 54 runs batted in. After the COVID-19 pandemic halted his career in 2020, he played again for the Everett AquaSox and Modesto Nuts in 2021.

In July 2022, the Mariners traded him, Andrew Moore, Edwin Arroyo, and Levi Stoudt to the Reds for pitcher Luis Castillo. The Reds added him to their 40-man roster in November, but later played Double-A baseball for the Chattanooga Lookouts. Marte was promoted to the Triple-A Louisville Bats in July 2023.

This suspension will delay his projected role as the starting third baseman. Jeimer Candelario, who the Reds signed to a three-year, $45 million contract, will likely take Marte’s place at third base.

Marte appeared in 35 games for Cincinnati last season, hitting .316/.366/.456. In 114 at-bats, he had 36 hits, 15 RBIs, and three home runs.

His suspension could also open up a spot for a utility infielder in the 40-man roster. Tony Kemp, Josh Harrison, and Jose Barrero are some candidates to take that spot.
