Rays Assign Junior Caminero to Triple-A Durham

As part of the Spring Training roster cuts, the Tampa Bay Rays will assign shortstop Junior Caminero to Triple-A Durham Bulls to begin the 2024 baseball season.

The 20-year-old Dominican player made 34 at-bats in seven games for the Rays last season. He batted .235/.278/.353, tallying eight hits, seven runs batted in, and a home run.

The then-Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) signed Caminero as an international free agent in July 2019. However, he did not play in 2020 because the minor leagues were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He made his professional baseball debut the following year with the Indians Red of the Dominican Summer League but was traded to the Rays for pitcher Tobias Myers in November 2021.

Caminero started his stint with the Rays for the Low-A Carolina League’s Charleston RiverDogs. He also suited up for the Florida Coast League Rays and the Perth Heat in the Australian Baseball League.

Caminero started the 2023 season with the Montgomery Biscuits of the Double-A Southern League. He also saw action for the Bowling Green Hot Rods in the A+ South Atlantic League before joining the Rays’ Major League Baseball roster.

After his seven-game stint in Tampa Bay, Caminero played for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League.

The Athletic’s Keith Law ranked him fifth in his Top 100 prospects list for manifesting power and balance in every plate appearance.

With Caminero in Triple-A, Tampa Bay's shortstop rotation will consist of Taylor Wells, Jose Caballero, Amed Rosario, and Curtis Mead.
