Padres Acquire Dylan Cease in Five-Player Trade

The Chicago White Sox and the San Diego Padres have agreed to terms on a trade for ace pitcher Dylan Cease. As the right-handed starter joins the Padres, the White Sox will get prospects Jairo Iriarte, Samuel Zavala, and Drew Thorpe. Chicago will also receive relief pitcher Steven Wilson.

Last season, Cease went 7-9 with a 4.58 earned run average for the White Sox. However, 2022 was his breakout season after going 14-8 with a 2.20 ERA. He struck out 227 batters and 1.109 WHIP in 184 innings. These numbers had him finish second in the American League Cy Young Award voting behind Justin Verlander.

In 2021, he went 13-7 with a 3.91 ERA. While he had 226 strikeouts, he led the American League with 13 wild pitches.

In addition to the Padres, the defending World Series champions, Texas Rangers, are also interested in trading for Cease because of injuries to Tyler Mahle, Max Scherzer, and Jacob deGrom.

The Padres will inherit Dylan Cease's contract with the White Sox. Therefore, he will receive an $8 million salary in 2024 and undergo arbitration next season.

Cease will join a starting pitcher’s rotation featuring Yu Darvish, Michael King, Joe Musgrove, Jhony Brito, and Matt Waldron. However, Cease might bump off either Brito or Waldron from the starting rotation. The Padres acquired Waldron and Brito from the trade that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees.
