Giants Trade Joey Bart To Pirates

The San Francisco Giants traded catcher Joey Bart to the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor-league pitcher Austin Strickland. The package San Franciso received in return highlights Bart's struggles in four seasons with the Giants.

They selected him second overall in the 2018 June Amateur Draft, and he made his Major League Baseball debut two years later. However, he played only 162 games in four seasons, batting .219 and having the fifth-highest strikeout percentage (35.4) among MLB players with at least 100 games played from 2020 to 2023.

Despite a solid spring performance, Bart became the odd man out as the third catcher in the Giants’ rotation. Aside from Patrick Bailey, San Francisco added Tom Murphy via a two-year, $8.25 million contract signed last December.

Therefore, he became the casualty when the Giants needed to vacate a spot in their 40-man roster for pitcher Daulton Jeffries. Meanwhile, the Pirates made a transaction with San Francisco for Bart instead of claiming him off waivers. Pittsburgh added him to their 40-man roster while designating Colin Selby for assignment.

Joey Bart will have a fresh start with the Pirates as he joins the catcher rotation featuring Endy Rodriguez and Henry Davis. Rodriguez is out of the season after having Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Before trading for Bart, the Pirates have won their first five games. They swept the Miami Marlins in four games and spoiled the Washington Nationals’ home opener.
