Mets Earn First Win In 2024, Hands Tigers First Loss

The New York Mets remained winless in their first five games, including a shutout in their series opener against the Detroit Tigers. However, they turned things around by earning their first victory of the 2024 Major League Baseball season while handing the Tigers their first loss.

However, the Mets’ victory was more a case of the Tigers struggling to find their stroke, as they scored only one run out of five hits. Meanwhile, the Mets won by registering only two runs, courtesy of Pete Alonso and Brett Baty.

The Tigers opened up the scoring when a Javier Baez line drive single to center field brought Colt Keith to home plate. That was all Detroit wrote, but it looked enough for a victory until the bottom of the ninth.

In front of a crowd of 15,020 at Citi Field, Alonso’s solo home run to center field leveled the score, earning him his 500th career RBI. Moments later, Tyrone Taylor had a walkoff single, bringing Baty home for the winning run.

Alonso was the best player for the Mets, getting a run and a hit in four at-bats. Taylor and Harrison Bader were the only other Mets players who registered a hit. Meanwhile, Francisco Lindor went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts for New York’s National League team.

For Detroit, Keith had two hits, while Baez, Zach McKinstry, and Spencer Torkelson each had one hit.

While Jose Butto pitched six innings for the Mets, reliever Reed Garrett earned the victory for New York after giving up only two hits and one walk while earning four strikeouts in three innings.

The Mets will try to extend their winning ways as they open their series against the Cincinnati Reds. Meanwhile, the Tigers will try to bounce back in their series versus the Athletics.
