Question

Jalen McMillan was picked 92nd in the draft, after two other receivers from his college team had already been chosen (Rome Odunze, Ja’Lynn Polk). What two schools in the history of the draft have had three receivers picked even sooner? Looking at the 1988 and 2000 drafts.

Answer

Miami and Florida State. With the 1988 Miami team, Michael Irvin, Brian Blades and Brett Perriman all went on to have 1,000-yard seasons in the NFL. Perriman was the 52nd pick despite being the third from his college team. In 2000, Laveranues Coles was the third Florida State receiver (78th overall) and outperformed the two earlier picks (Peter Warrick, Ron Dugans), going over 1,000 yards for both the Jets and Washington.

Quick scan of the files suggests the closest is 2008 Arkansas (Darren McFadden at 4 and Felix Jones at 22). Not really close but also impressive was 2018 Georgia (Nick Chubb and Sony Michel both went in the top 35).

It's funny to look back at the early 80s and see a couple of years with 5-6 running backs going in the top 20 picks.

With Arkansas in 2008, it also had another running back selected late: Peyton Hillis, who had a 1,000-yard season with the Browns.

When I was putting this question together, I saw one other notable receiver who was drafted after two of his college teammates. Bob Chandler, who came out of Southern Cal in 1971 and had four seasons with 700-800 yards. Modest totals by today's standards, but it was a different game at that time. Using PPR scoring, Chandler finished with top-10 numbers among wide receivers three times, with another four seasons in the top 30. Played for the Bills and Raiders.
