Phillies, Dodgers, Braves, Guardians, Yankees Have 20 Wins

With the first quarter of the 2024 Major League Baseball season over, five teams have reached a 20-win milestone. The Philadelphia Phillies were the first to 21 after defeating the Los Angeles Angels in back-to-back games (April 30 and May 1).

The Phillies came from behind to earn a 7-5 victory against the Angels. They scored four runs in the last two innings, thanks to a single by Alec Bohm and home runs by Nick Castellanos and Johan Rojas. In their following game, they scored two runs in the second inning against Los Angeles, enough to improve their record to 21-11. Zack Wheeler earned his third win by giving up one run and striking out six batters in five innings.

But while they have more victories, they are in second place in the National League East because the Atlanta Braves have a better win-loss record. The Braves earned their 20th victory on May 1 against the Seattle Mariners. Austin Riley and Ronald Acuña Jr. combined for three of Atlanta’s five runs, while Chris Sale surrendered only one run in five innings.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers earned their 20th victory after dominating the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-0. Mookie Betts continues his hot start to the 2024 season, earning three hits and two RBIs in five at-bats. Yoshinobu Yamamoto got his third victory after striking out five batters and blanking the Diamondbacks in six innings.

The Guardians earned their 20th victory in extra innings against the Houston Astros. Steven Kwan’s line-drive double in the top of the tenth inning brought Gabriel Arias home, settling the 3-2 final count. Kwan had three hits and two RBIs in five at-bats, while Will Brennan had two hits and one run.

Finally, the Yankees earned win number 20 by blanking the Baltimore Orioles. Luis Gil, Caleb Ferguson, Ian Hamilton, and Clay Holmes combined to earn a 2-0 shutout over the Orioles.
