Paul Skenes to Make MLB Debut on Saturday

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Paul Skenes first overall in the 2023 June Amateur Draft. Baseball Reference listed him as a pitcher, designated hitter, and catcher, showing his versatility. But after a year in the minors, he will debut in Major League Baseball on Saturday, May 11, against the Chicago Cubs.

Before joining the Pirates, Skenes played Triple-A Baseball for the Indianapolis Indians. In 27.1 innings pitched over seven games, he had a 0.99 ERA, a 0.45 WHIP, and 45 strikeouts. Before playing for Indianapolis, he suited up for the Florida Complex League Pirates, the Bradenton Marauders, and the Altoona Curve.

Before transferring to Louisiana State University, Skenes played two seasons for the Air Force Falcons in the Mountain West Conference. In his lone season with the Tigers, he had a 13-2 record, a 1.69 ERA, and 209 strikeouts in 122.2 innings.

The Pirates could use the boost Skenes might bring after losing their last two matches. They are at 17-21 after starting the season with five consecutive victories. Their record puts them five games behind the Cubs and the Milwaukee Brews for the National League Central lead.

Skenes’ debut will be the second game of the Pirates’ three-game series against the Cubs. The game will start at 4:05 p.m. Eastern Time.
