Yu Darvish Joins Exclusive Club for Japanese-Born MLB Pitchers

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Yu Darvish became the third Japanese-born pitcher with 200 combined wins in Major League Baseball and Nippon Professional Baseball. He reached that impressive feat in their May 19 victory against the Atlanta Braves.

Darvish gave up two hits and zero runs in that game while striking out nine batters in seven innings. The 37-year-old pitcher threw 99 pitches against the Braves; 70 were strikes. He hasn’t given up a run since April 14, when the Los Angeles Dodgers scored three runs on him. Darvish’s scoreless streak translates to 25 innings and counting.

The victory over the Braves gave Darvish his 107th career MLB victory, split across his stints with the Padres, the Chicago Cubs, the Dodgers, and the Texas Rangers. Since he’s still actively pitching, he can surpass Hideo Nomo’s 201 combined wins and Hiroki Kuroda’s 203.

The latest victory improves Darvish’s record to 4-1 in nine games. He has a 2.08 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, and 46 strikeouts in 47.2 innings. He has 21 strikeouts and zero runs allowed in his three May starts. Darvish has given up only 13 walks and two home runs in nine games this season. Keeping up this pace could also earn him his sixth All-Star appearance.

More importantly, the victory keeps them in contention for a Wild Card spot in the 2024 National League playoffs. At 24-24, they have the sixth-best record in the NL.
