RB David Johnson Retires After Eight NFL Seasons

Running back David Johnson announced his retirement on Instagram after eight NFL seasons. He played for the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, and New Orleans Saints throughout his professional football career.

A portion of his retirement address reads:

“There’s been highs and lows, but I’ve felt very fortunate and honored by the people who’ve supported me along this journey. The relationships and brotherhoods I’ve formed with so many of my dawgs will never be forgotten…I’m looking forward to my next career path in life. I don’t know exactly what that will be, but I hope it will bring me the same passion, excitement, and love as football did!”

The Cardinals selected him in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. He earned First Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors a year after tallying 1,239 rushing yards, 879 receiving yards, and 20 total touchdowns. Unfortunately, a wrist injury limited him to one game in 2017.

He bounced back in 2018, finishing with 1,386 yards from scrimmage and ten touchdowns in 16 games. The former Northern Iowa standout played one more year for Arizona before getting traded to the Texans during the 2020 offseason.

After two seasons in Houston, the Saints signed him to their practice squad in November 2022. They elevated Johnson to the active roster a month later, allowing him to play five games. Johnson will finish his NFL career with 4,071 rushing yards, 2,803 receiving yards, and 57 touchdowns.
