Power Hitter Rafael Devers Makes Red Sox History

Third baseman Rafael Devers achieved what no other Boston Red Sox player has done before. The Dominican infielder connected on his sixth consecutive home run in as many games, tying him with the streak that Paul Goldschmidt achieved in July 2019.

In the top of the fourth inning, Devers completed a two-run home run against right-handed pitcher Taj Bradley’s 97-mile-per-hour fastball. The ball traveled to the left-field stands at a 29-degree launch angle and a 104.5 mph speed.

His hit helped the Red Sox score a 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Before this home run, Devers achieved the same feat in each of their three games against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Before that, he sent two balls over the fence against the Rays.

Before his sixth consecutive home run, Devers tied former Red Sox players Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx, Dick Stuart, George Scott, and Jose Canseco for connecting on a home run for five consecutive games.

With his sixth home run in as many games, Devers can prolong his streak if he can figure out Zack Littell’s pitching on Tuesday, May 21. Getting a home run in each of their next two games would tie Devers with Dale Long, Don Mattingly, and Ken Griffey Jr. for the all-time record of home runs in consecutive games.

The home run off Bradley was Devers’ tenth this season. He is hitting .284/.380/.947 with 40 hits and 23 RBIs.
