Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. will be out for the remainder of the 2024 Major League Baseball season after suffering a non-contact torn ACL. He suffered the unfortunate injury at the top of the first inning during their May 26 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
While safely at second base, Acuña tried running to third base as fellow Venezuelan Martin Perez delivered a pitch. However, the four-time All-Star's knee buckled, leaving him motionless on the ground while in obvious pain. He eventually walked gingerly on his own while favoring one knee.
Despite the injury, the Braves dominated the Pirates 8-1. Chris Sale earned his eighth win this season after surrendering one run while striking out eight batters in seven innings. Jarred Kelenic had three hits in four at-bats and three runs for Atlanta.

However, Acuña sidelined for 2024 could have significant repercussions for the Braves' campaign. Though he's struggling through 49 games this season, he could still contribute to Atlanta's cause, especially in base-running.
On a personal level, Acuña's ACL injury also means he won't have a chance to win his second consecutive National League Most Valuable Player award. He won it last year after tallying .337/.416/.596 with 41 home runs, 73 stolen bases, and 106 RBIs. Those impressive numbers resulted in his third Silver Slugger Award in six MLB seasons, making his absence from the game a loss for both him and the Braves.
Looking ahead, the Braves face the challenge of competing for a playoff spot without one of their best players. They are now six games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the National League East lead and in fourth place for the NL Wild Card race. The absence of Acuña, a key contributor to their success, could significantly impact their playoff prospects.
