Olson, Skubal, Flaherty Leading Tigers' Roar From The Mound

The Detroit Tigers have returned to .500 (28-28) after their 5-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on May 30. While they are nine games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the American League Central lead, they are just three games behind the Minnesota Twins in the Wild Card race.

If their good fortune continues, the Tigers will have their first postseason appearance since 2014. But with a long way to go in the 2024 Major League Baseball season, the Tigers will need starting pitchers Reese Olson, Tarik Skubal, and Jack Flaherty to remain consistently good.

Olson’s 1.92 ERA is third in the American League. Meanwhile, Flaherty’s 90 strikeouts and Skubal’s 0.82 WHIP lead the AL. Skubal’s 2.01 ERA ranks fifth among AL starting pitchers.

Flaherty had a no-hitter going in their shutout victory against the Red Sox. However, he got the job done after giving up one hit and striking out nine batters in 6.2 innings. Alex Faedo and Tyler Holton kept Boston off the board to complete the Yankees’ third shutout victory this month.

However, while the three are among the best in specific pitching categories in the AL, only Skubal (7-1) has a winning record among the three. Olson has a 1-5 record, while Flaherty is at 2-4. Their remaining top starting pitchers, Casey Mize and Kenta Maeda, are a combined 3-4.

The Tigers have a good thing going, winning five of their last six games. They can close out May 2024 in good fashion with another victory over the Red Sox on May 31 at Fenway Park.
