Question

Forty years ago today, the NFL held a supplemental draft of USFL players. It included future Hall of Famers Steve Young, Reggie White and Gary Zimmerman. What two wide receivers selected in that draft later had 1,000-yard receiving seasons in the NFL? Both won multiple Super Bowls, and both had a season with double-digit touchdown catches.

Answer

Ricky Sanders and Gary Clark. Along with Art Monk, they helped Washington in 1989 become the first team with three 1,000-yard receivers. Sanders was the 16th pick of that USFL draft, chosen by the Patriots, but never played there. Clark was the 12th of the 15 wide receivers chosen; at his peak, he caught 224 passes for 3,681 yards and 27 TDs during over a 3-year period. Two USFL wide receivers made Pro Bowls, and Washington got both of them. They each caught 2 TDs in Washington’s Super Bowl wins over Denver and Buffalo. Two other receivers made Pro Bowls as kicker returners, and Washington picked one of them, too (Clarence Verdin was on the strike-year team that won the Super Bowl but made his two Pro Bowls with the Colts). Gerald McNeil (Browns) was the other Pro Bowl returner. Two 1,000-yard runners were chosen in the 1984 draft: Mike Rozier and Kevin Mack.
