Trent Grisham Playing Hero for Yankees in Juan Soto's Place

Last September, the San Diego Padres traded Juan Soto and Trent Grisham to the New York Yankees for Jhony Brito, Kyle Higashioka, Michael King, Drew Thorpe, and Randy Vasquez. Soto went on to do what he does best, hitting .318/.424/.603 with 17 home runs and 53 RBIs in 64 games this season.

Conversely, Grisham is hitting .100/.258/.538 in 50 at-bats. However, he came up big in their June 9 game to prevent a sweep against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He filled in for the injured Soto, who felt left arm discomfort during the rain delay of their June 6 game against the Minnesota Twins.

With the Dodgers up by one run (3-2) in the bottom of the sixth inning, Grisham faced Tyler Glasnow while the Yankee Stadium crowd chanted, “We want Soto!” With two men on base, the two-time Gold Glove winner drilled a three-run home run to right field, giving the Yankees a 5-3 lead. It was Grisham’s only hit of the day.

While Will Smith’s sacrifice fly to bring Shohei Ohtani home trimmed New York’s lead to one, 5-4, Aaron Judge sealed the deal with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Winning the closer of their three-game series against the Dodgers improved the Yankees’ record to 46-21, Major League Baseball’s best record as of June 10, 2024.

After the home stand against the Dodgers, the Yankees will proceed to a seven-game road trip, starting with a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals. Then, they will head to Fenway Park for a three-game series versus the Boston Red Sox.
