Dodgers Trade for Cavan Biggio

Utility player Cavan Biggio is getting a new lease on his Major League Baseball career after the Los Angeles Dodgers traded for him and some cash considerations. In return, the Toronto Blue Jays will acquire pitching prospect Braydon Fisher, who last played for Double-A’s New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Being National Baseball Hall of Famer Craig Biggio’s son, much weight was bestowed on Cavan Biggio’s shoulders when the Blue Jays called him up to the majors in 2019. Initially, he showed promise after finishing fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year Voting. Biggio hit .234/.364/.429 with 16 home runs and 48 RBIs that season.

But since then, he has become more of a rotation player than a starter. After the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Biggio played 79 games in 2021 and 97 in 2022. He played 111 games last year but had comparable numbers to his rookie season (.235/.340/.370, nine home runs, 40 RBIs).

In 44 games this season, Cavan Biggio is hitting .200/.323/.291 with two home runs and nine RBIs. However, the Blue Jays traded him to make room for newly-promoted first baseman/outfielder Spencer Horwitz.

The trade also spared Biggio from being reassigned to the minor leagues. He will join the Dodgers to provide support to their talent-laden roster.
