Gerrit Cole To Make 2024 MLB Debut Against Orioles

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced that starting pitcher Gerrit Cole will make his 2024 Major League Baseball debut on Wednesday, June 19, against the Baltimore Orioles. The 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner dealt with elbow discomfort starting at Spring Training.

After consulting with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, Cole was recommended to rest for up to four weeks due to edema and inflammation. However, the Yankees did not take anything for granted by placing him on the 60-day injured list on March 28.

Cole made two rehab starts for Double-A Somerset Patriots to test his recovered elbow. He surrendered one run in eight innings pitched for a 1.13 ERA. In his second start for Somerset, Cole allowed two hits and earned four strikeouts in 4.2 innings against the Hartford Yard Goats.

Luckily for Cole, he could take it easy in recovery because the Yankees have been one of the best teams in baseball. They became the first team to reach 50 wins this season. Aaron Judge and Juan Soto are putting up MVP-caliber numbers, and their pitching staff has been lights out.

Luis Gil has a 9-1 record and a 2.03 earned run average in 14 starts. Carlos Rodon is at 9-3 with a 3.28 ERA, while Marcus Stroman has a 6-3 record in 15 starts.

Meanwhile, Cole will pitch against an upstart Orioles team that is just 1.5 games behind them in the American League East standings and are coming off back-to-back victories.

Cole won last year's AL Cy Young Award after finishing with a 15-4 record and an AL-leading 2.63 ERA. He led the league in shutouts (2) and WHIP (0.981). In addition to that award, Cole is a six-time MLB All-Star and a three-time All-MLB First Team member.
