Yankees Call Up Ben Rice for Injured Anthony Rizzo

With first baseman Anthony Rizzo on the 15-day injured list due to a right forearm fracture, the New York Yankees called up Ben Rice to take the three-time Major League Baseball All-Star’s place. Rice might see extensive playing time if he does well, given that Rizzo might miss up to eight weeks.

Rice spent time in Double-A Somerset Patriots and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders this season, hitting. 275/.393/.532 with a .925 OPS and 15 home runs. He also has 61 hits and 36 RBIs in 268 plate appearances throughout 60 games.

The former Dartmouth standout debuted with the Yankees against division rivals Baltimore Orioles on June 18, tallying one hit in four at-bats.

In addition to his hitting, the Yankees hope that Rice will have excellent fielding command from his position. While playing in the minors, he had a .970 fielding percentage as a first baseman and .996 a catcher. He had 425 putouts in 431 attempts, including 29 assists.

Meanwhile, Rizzo was hitting .223/.289/.341 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs before the injury. The four-time Gold Glove Award winner has 59 hits in 264 at-bats and a .630 OPS. Rizzo suffered a forearm injury after colliding with the Boston Red Sox's Brennan Bernardino as he ran toward first base during their June 16 game at Fenway Park.
