Giancarlo Stanton Placed on IL Due to a Strained Hamstring Injury

Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton has been doing reasonably well in his seventh season with the New York Yankees. In 69 games, he is hitting .246/.302/.492 with 18 home runs and 45 RBIs. Unfortunately, he could miss up to four weeks due to a strained left hamstring.

Stanton did not finish their June 22 game against the Atlanta Braves. As Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed, it was a mild strain that didn't require surgery. However, after receiving a plasma infection, Boone estimated that Stanton would need about a month to recover.

The injury became evident when the five-time MLB All-Star winced after crossing third base off Gleyber Torres' double. Before that sequence, Stanton hit a double that bounced off the center-field wall.

While Stanton missed only ten games before the hamstring injury, he didn't take the field. Worst yet, injuries have become a regular occurrence for Stanton after missing nearly 40 percent of his games in the last five seasons. In addition to his latest injury, he missed time due to ankle, quadriceps, Achilles, and ACL injuries.

With Stanton sidelined for up to four weeks, Aaron Judge might see some action as the designated hitter while Trent Grisham takes Judge's place on the outfield. In addition to these adjustments, the Yankees traded with the Oakland Athletics for first baseman J.D. Davis.

Giancarlo Stanton is the 2017 National League Most Valuable Player with the Miami Marlins. He also won his second Silver Slugger Award that year, three seasons after his first.
