Shohei Ohtani Sets Dodgers Franchise RBI Record

It’s easy to run out of superlatives while describing Shohei Ohtani’s excellence. He continues to grow his legend after every game he plays. This time, he is already in the Los Angeles Dodgers history books after 79 games for establishing a franchise record for RBIs.

The two-time American League Most Valuable Player registered his tenth consecutive game with an RBI. No other Dodgers player has achieved that feat since RBIs became an official stat in 1920. Ohtani established the record in fashion, hitting a leadoff home run off the Chicago White Sox's Erick Fedde.

In addition to putting the Dodgers on the board at the top of the first inning, his NL-leading 25th home run this season traveled 437 feet from home plate to the right-center stands. That shot helped improve his OPS to 1.045.

More importantly, the Dodgers earned a 4-0 victory against the White Sox. Ohtani also had a pair of walks in his team's 51st victory in 82 games. The win also completed a sweep for Los Angeles' NL team over the White Sox.

After that game, Ohtani leads the NL in batting average (.322) and slugging percentage (.643). He is also the National League leader in runs (65), OPS+ (194), and total bases (200). If he maintains his current pace, Ohtani could finish the 2024 MLB regular season with 198 hits (42 doubles), 48 home runs, 120 RBIs, 32 stolen bases, and 126 runs.

The victory keeps the Dodgers on pace with the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL's best record. They also have an 8.5-game lead over second-place San Diego Padres in the NL West.

In addition to Ohtani's record-setting performance, Gavin Stone became the first Dodgers rookie since 2013 to pitch a shutout. He gave up four runs and struck out seven batters in nine innings.
