Nationals Got A Good Return From Juan Soto Trade

In August 2022, the Washington Nationals traded Juan Soto and Josh Bell to the San Diego Padres in exchange for six players. Since then, Soto has moved on to the New York Yankees after playing two seasons with the Padres. Meanwhile, one of the players Washington received, Luke Voit, is now playing in the Mexican League.

However, the other five players who joined Washington are still on the roster. As it turned out, the Nationals got a solid group of players after trading the four-time Silver Slugger Award winner based on their performances (so far) this season. One of those players, James Wood, made his Major League Baseball debut for the Nationals yesterday against the New York Mets. He earned one hit in four at-bats.

Wood's new teammate, MacKenzie Gore, has 322 strikeouts in 291.1 innings pitched for the Nationals. CJ Abrams has a .860 OPS, a .284 batting average, and a .348 on-base percentage. Jarlin Susana has 203 strikeouts in 159.1 innings for Washington, while Robert Hassell III is slugging .394 in the minors.

Gore, Abrams, and Susana's efforts helped the Nationals stay within striking distance of a National League Wild Card spot. They hope Wood (.353/.463/.595, 10 home runs, 37 RBIs, 10 stolen bases in 52 minor league games) will be a high-impact player who can turn their fortunes around. Oddly, the Nationals must thank Juan Soto if the team makes it to this year's playoffs.
