Trent Williams Holding Out for Contract Adjustment

While Trent Williams is among the older offensive tackles in the NFL, he’s still one of the best, as proven by his third consecutive First-Team All-Pro selection with the San Francisco 49ers. That exceptional level of play makes him deserving of the six-year, $138.06 million contract extension he signed in 2021.

However, as the new NFL season commences, Williams is exercising his leverage by being absent at training camp. Therefore, he will be subject to a $50,000 fine for every practice day he skips.

While he’s under contract until 2026, he won’t have guaranteed money in the succeeding years of his massive contract extension. Therefore, he is staying away from the 49ers, hoping to get guaranteed cash in the remaining years of his contract.

Spotrac lists that Williams will earn a $20 million base salary this season, $22.5 million in 2025, and $32.2 million in 2026. However, those numbers could change if the Niners heed Williams’ request.

The 11-time Pro Bowler deserves that contract adjustment after playing all games during his 14th NFL season. More importantly, he consistently excelled for San Francisco, as proven by the 89.9 overall grade given by Pro Football Focus.

The football analytics publication arrived at that number from his 79.8 pass-blocking grade and 90.1 run-blocking mark. Meanwhile, his 97 career PFF grade is the highest among offensive tackles in NFL history.

Trent Williams arrived in San Francisco after the Washington Redskins traded him for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and a 2021 third-rounder.
