Question
What defensive line, for eight years, had three Hall of Fame players lining up alongside each other?
Answer
Chicago Bears. From 1983-1990, Richard Dent, Dan Hampton and Steve McMichael were all on that team (McMichael is getting enshrined this year). There have been only four other instances in which teams (briefly) had three Hall of Fame defensive linemen. The Rams in 1971, with Merlin Olsen joined by Deacon Jones (in his last year) and Jack Youngblood (in his first year). The 49ers in 1998 had Charles Haley, Bryant Young and Chris Doleman. The 1954 Browns. Before the Bears drafted Dent in 1983, they had a year with Alan Page (1981). Kansas City had a nice run with Curley Culp, Bobby Bell and Buck Buchanon in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, but while Bell was drafted as a defensive end, he was listed as a linebacker by the time Culp showed up in 1968.
