Who should fantasy teams sell high on?

Kamara, Dobbins make lists

ASK THE EXPERTS appears weekly from training camp through the Super Bowl with answers to a new question being posted Thursday morning. How the guest experts responded when we asked them: Who should fantasy teams sell high on?

SCOTT PIANOWSKI

I think it's a good time to sell high on Alvin Kamara. He's on pace to get 340 carries, which simply isn't practical for his body type. He's never had more than 240 in a season. New Orleans just lost its center and Derek Carr had a messy Week 3 after two smash games. Kamara is also meandering through an age-29 season, which is a concern; his last full season came in 2017. Obviously you're not trading Kamara on a whim, you should command a good return. But regression is likely to come calling.

I targeted Ohio State alumnus, J.K. Dobbins, as a top 3 sleeper candidate for this season, mostly based on his return to health, plus the hiring of Jim Harbaugh as the Chargers head coach. In 2020, Dobbins appeared in 15 games posting 800+ yds and 9 rushing TDs, and appeared poised for a stellar career. Then the injury bug took a great big bite, leaving Dobbins with just 8 games played in 2021, followed by only 1 game played last season. This season, Dobbins has regained--and then some--his 2020 form, with over 300 yds and 2 TDs in just 3 weeks. The Chargers are poised to run, run, run this season, so I am hoping that they don't overuse him, making him more susceptible to injury. JKD is just 25 years old, so maybe his legs are still pretty fresh, but his season-long prospects with very heavy usage make me a bit nervous. I truly hope I'm wrong as he's a great person, as well as a great player, but selling him high in fantasy may be a reasonable course of action.

There are plenty of candidates, but the most obvious are the injury replacements like Zach Charbonnet and Jordan Mason. My top choice though is Jauan Jennings, who had a 3-touchdown breakout this week with the 49ers missing three of their top offensive pieces. Jennings will be relegated to backup duties soon, and this 3-touchdown outing will be a trivia answer soon enough.

I’m not a big J.K. Dobbins fan. He popped a couple of long runs against bad defenses (Raiders, Panthers), going for 130-plus in both of those games. But I don’t see him having much success against against the higher-caliber opponents they’ll see. I think we’ll continue to see a fair amount of Gus Edwards, who’s more of a big banger between the tackles. And neither one of them has done much in the passing game (which hurts them in PPR formats). Certainly, I wouldn’t want to be running Dobbins out this week against KC (but that’s low-hanging fruit, with both of the offensive tackles probably out).

DAVID DOREY

Alvin Kamara enjoyed a career-best start to the season, but he also played Carolina, Dallas, and Philadelphia. That was the No. 28, No. 32, and No. 15 best defenses against running backs. Versus the Eagles who are average on defense, he ran for only 87 yards on 26 carries (3.3 yards per carry) while at home. He's playing in Atlanta and inKansas City next - we'll see his impressive opening decline significantly. We're also talking about a 29-year-old back that has missed two to four games per season since he was a rookie.

It's not exactly selling high, since they just lost 24-3. But if there's any one out there still in on this team, I've got a Dolphin to sell them. Mike McDaniel is an interesting guy with some solid offensive acumen, but I don't see any way he turns things around with the quarterbacks available to him and the overall roster construction. I would be looking to move DeVon Achane, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle if I could get anything within a round of where they were drafted a few weeks ago.
