Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn announced that defensive lineman Jonathan Allen will be out for the remainder of the 2024 NFL season after dealing with a pectoral tear that required surgery. Allen will finish the season with 13 solo tackles, six quarterback hits, and two sacks in six games.
Allen suffered the injury during the Commanders’ Week 6 game against the Baltimore Ravens. He was visibly in pain after Derrick Henry scored a touchdown in the third quarter. A subsequent MRI revealed the tear, and the team’s medical personnel required surgery.
The former Alabama standout has been a defensive stalwart for the Washington franchise since drafting him in 2017. He made the Pro Bowl in consecutive seasons (2021 and 2022) after tallying a combined 16.5 sacks, three passes defended, two forced fumbles, and 75 solo tackles. Last season, Allen had 33 solo tackles and 5.5 sacks in 16 games.

The pectoral tear is Allen’s first significant injury since the Lisfranc injury, which limited him to five games during his rookie season. Since then, he has played at least 15 games from 2018 to 2023. With Allen sidelined, Johnny Newton will likely take his place as starting defensive tackle alongside Daron Payne.
Dorance Armstrong or Javonte Jean-Baptiste can also step into Allen’s role if they recover from their injuries during the Ravens game.
