Sean McVay Becomes Winningest Coach In Rams History

Despite the controversy surrounding the ending of their Week 8 Thursday Night Football game against the Minnesota Vikings, the Los Angeles Rams already earned their third victory in seven games this season. Meanwhile, that’s Sean McVay’s 80th victory with the Rams, making him the winningest head coach in franchise history.

McVay surpassed John Robinson after the Rams’ 30-20 triumph over the Vikings. His 80 wins as head coach are divided into 73 in the regular season and seven in the playoffs. Four postseason victories came in 2021 when he guided the squad to victory in Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals.

McVay has had one losing season since taking over the Rams in 2017. However, that 5-12 record in 2022 is an anomaly because two of their top offensive players, Cooper Kupp and Matthew Stafford, dealt with season-ending injuries.

When those players got healthy last year, the Rams finished at 10-7, their fifth double-digit winning season under McVay. Having Kupp and Puka Nacua healthy this time can make the Rams a force to reckon with.

As for McVay, he’s already among the league’s best coaches in his eighth NFL season. In addition to leading the Rams to two Super Bowl stints, he helped the NFC West squad to five postseason appearances. He’s done all these before reaching 40 because the team hired him when he was 30.

At 38, McVay has much football genius left in him. He could coach for another decade if the Rams feel he’s still their best bet. But before looking at the distant future, he will devise a game plan against their division rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, for Week 9.
