Poetic Justice For Jake Bates As Lions Beat Texans

As The Texans Wire managing editor Cole Thompson pointed out, the Houston Texans waived placekicker Jake Bates before the 2023 NFL season. That decision led the former Texas State and Arkansas standout to become a brick salesman before getting a shot at the United Football League.

However, after an impressive stint with the UFL’s Michigan Panthers, Bates found his way back to the NFL. The Detroit Lions came calling, and he earned the kicker’s spot. Finally, the 25-year-old special teamer came full circle after beating the team that released him.

But before sealing the Lions’ eighth win in nine games, Bates converted a 58-yarder to level the count at 23. With time winding down, Bates sent the ball inside the left upright to settle a 26-23 victory. Bates’ kicking prowess bailed out Jared Goff, who had five interceptions against the Texans.

Likewise, he has the last laugh after Houston deemed him not good enough. Through nine games, Bates has converted all 14 field goal attempts and missed one extra point in 23 tries.

More importantly, the two field goals from Bates helped the Lions maintain the National Football Conference’s best record. Holding onto that spot will earn them a first-round bye, giving them an extra week to rest before the postseason starts.
